Aspiring Genetics, Biochemistry & Biomolecular Engineering Researcher

I’m Ziven Arfa, a high school senior with a strong interest in genetics, biochemistry, biomedical engineering, and the science of human aging. My long-term goal is to contribute to research that helps us better understand the biological mechanisms of aging and ultimately extends the number of years people can live healthy, productive lives.

Throughout high school, I have pursued a rigorous academic curriculum heavily focused on AP-level coursework, particularly in science and mathematics. I am especially interested in understanding how genetics, cellular biology, chemistry, and engineering can intersect to address complex questions about human health and longevity. As I prepare for college, I hope to explore these fields through laboratory research and mentorship while developing the skills necessary for a future career in biomedical research.

Outside the classroom, music has been an important part of my high school experience. As a bassoonist, I have earned UIL 5A recognition and spent two years as a member of my school’s marching band, including being part of the program that placed third at the UIL State Marching Band competition. These experiences taught me the importance of preparation, precision, collaboration, and contributing to something much larger than my individual role.

Athletics have also been part of my life. I have competed in tennis at approximately the 4.0 level and played football during my freshman year before an injury shortened my season. Both experiences strengthened my appreciation for persistence, discipline, and the relationship between human biology and physical performance. Earlier in my academic career, I was also honored to receive the President’s Education Award in middle school.

My greatest interest today is the future. Advances in genetics, genomics, cellular biology, biotechnology, and regenerative medicine are creating opportunities to investigate questions about aging that previous generations could only imagine answering. I want to be part of that work.

My goal is not simply to study how long humans live, but to contribute to research that helps people remain healthier for more of the years they have. I am currently seeking opportunities to learn from researchers and mentors whose work can help me better understand the path from scientific curiosity to meaningful discovery.
